Due to major changes in cities caused by the rapid population growth and its impact on the environment, the General Assembly of the Organization of the United Nations (UN) decided by the year 1985, the first Monday of October each year be held on World Habitat Day. Its main objective is to raise awareness to people, communities, organizations and governments, serious housing problems that afflict the world's population and the need to improve with short-, medium-and long-term living conditions of people. Habitat for Humanity in Argentina (HPHA) work, day after day, on par with those communities that are in a position of vulnerability so that together we can solve the problem of habitat and access to housing. In Argentina, 4 in 10 people live in inadequate housing conditions, so it is necessary a joint effort to reverse this situation.
In all this the role of volunteerism is key, which is why from HPHA, we wanted to honor her invaluable contribution and help in getting more people to live in a better world. We know the effort involved in putting the body, spirit and time to a problem that sometimes seems to overwhelm us, but on the other hand, it also encourages us with pleasing victories that fill us with happiness and show that there is truly possible horizon achieve. For this, on Saturday October 9th Brigade was HPHA volunteers for World Habitat Day. Serves as a meeting, not only to give recognition for their commitment and collaboration on this special day, but also as a forum for all partners from different places with the work of the organization, to meet and share with other volunteers the experience of what a brigade .
Brigade members had rented and HPHA volunteers (including the Secretary of the National Executive Committee). It began with a talk in Buenos Aires office, then go to La Matanza the "Barrio January 22, where after an introduction and welcome the brigade was subdivided into smaller groups to perform the tasks in each house with their respective family. The morning passed nicely with smiles and lively conversation among those who worked side by side to fill a foundation or help with the ends of a flat. Families were amazed not by the momentum and diligence with which volunteers assist.
Then, at noon, once again, everyone gathered for lunch and start to make a joint reflection on World Habitat Day, sharing the feelings that everyone had to respect. They read a few lines on the origin of the date established by the UN General Assembly and the critical state is currently showing the housing problem worldwide and specifically in Argentina. It was a place of reflection where all agreed that the solution always starts with getting involved. Perhaps the words that Ariel Sosa used as a closure, summarized the thinking of many of those present: "No matter the size of the problem that put us in front, or the hard work we do from our humble position. We think that every grain of sand that we bring to our work, will somehow change the world. " During the rest of the afternoon, the brigade continued its work until closing time came. It was a special and emotional moment, which included the presence of families and members of HPHA, who thanked the volunteers for their work and shared experience, then give them a little souvenir.
Many volunteers expressed their happiness and pledged their presence for future conferences, as Martín Diego Torres - volunteer - who said: "Today was a very nice experience in my life, I would like to continue helping. .. This type of activity should be multiplied and adding more and more people wanting to help others. " By families, Elvio owner of a house where he worked a group of the brigade, said: "We want to thank all the time and the help they gave us. This is not very common today nobody gives anything without asking anything in return. "
