EDITORIAL: THE DREAM OF WALTER

Walter with his wife and son lived for three years in an informal settlement called "January 22" , in La Matanza, Province of Buenos Aires. Since coming to the neighborhood, he built with his own efforts a small piece, which could provide shelter for his family. He became interested in our organization after attending a Habitat store that took place in their neighborhood, and in which volunteer architects, lawyers and other professionals provided pro bono technical assistance to families low income in poor housing conditions.

At the time of parting, Walter surprised everyone with an invitation to the inauguration of the house of their dreams and asked Diego (one of the architects volunteers) if I wanted to be the godfather of the house. Diego agreed.

The family is waiting for another meeting, and hopes to someday receive brigades of volunteers to help in building his dream, a dream which shows that working together and appropriate advice, any wish can come true.

On December 5 of each year marks the International Volunteer Day (IVD), a date which began in 1985 by the General Assembly of the United Nations to promote economic and social development. During this last time volunteer work has grown steadily, achieving a great social importance that it is as a powerful resource to promote the conquest equal fundamental human rights.

The contribution of volunteerism is a cornerstone in the work of any NGO. It is for this reason that Habitat for Humanity Argentina (HPHA), wanted to match the work done throughout the year by its volunteers, organizing a flywheel in order to highlight the value of that work in solidarity and inviting more people to join to improve their environment.

The event was attended by members of HPHA and many volunteers, some new and some already known for his work in the organization. It began with a meeting, using as a meeting place Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, where attendees, alluding T-shirt and hat, is provisioned brochures and separated into groups, began to travel to spread to surrounding streets joy conclusion and provide information to passers and any interested parties.

TIGRE, FORMOSA

In late October 2010 a tornado devastated much of the town of Pozo del Tigre, in Argentina's Formosa province, killing four people and leaving hundreds of injured. The atmospheric, unusual features in the area, intensity and destructive power, caused the collapse of houses, blasting roofs, fallen trees and poles, leaving a large number of families living in emergency care and housing.

A response team program Disaster Habitat for Humanity Argentina, formed by: Thomas Carr-Rollitt (voluntary) and Carolina Mansur (National Coordinator of Disaster Response) traveled there in order to internalize the event site and engaging with other stakeholders in relief efforts and post-event collaboration. Conducted a damage assessment of homes in two neighborhoods most affected by photographic records and interviews with neighbors, government officials, politicians and social leaders and members of other NGOs.


And thanks to the collaboration of the Red Cross Argentina, the team was able to access the neighborhood Qompi, Pilagá Aboriginal community, where 95% of homes were destroyed. They also contacted several community reference and agreed on a mutual commitment to the Red Cross Argentina in the event that there is a further networking in this Aboriginal community.

To date, the situation began to show a slow recovery process. Through loans and grants from the Provincial Government to the affected families, will begin the reconstruction of a town that was destroyed almost entirely.
Following the established line with past experience in Disaster Response (Tartagal 2009, Chile 2010) Habitat for Humanity Argentina has decided to commit to the theme by setting it as a more programmatic area.
